Wooden posts & railings are key architectural components for verandas, porches and decks from both a functional and aesthetic point of view.
While the functional aspects of supporting the roof or preventing falls can be achieved with basic structural components and construction methods, it’s the eye-catching details that bring these additions to life and anchor them to your home and landscape, creating a space you’ll enjoy spending time and be proud of for years to come.
Whether you’re renovating an old farmhouse or building a new home these downloadable woodworking plans will guide you through the rewarding process of crafting your own sturdy and beautiful wooden railings and dressing up structural posts.
The subtle and easy-to-make details create interesting shadows and highlights that will add a warmth of character that you won’t achieve with most commercially available products.
An Original Stonehaven Design
The design for the veranda modeled in these plans evolved over a period of two years. Considerable thought was given to how we would use the space and what we wanted it to be.
Foremost in our priorities were to make the addition look like it had been part of the original house, including architectural elements that were appropriate in scale and proportion, cohesive, and relatively easy to achieve with my intermediate-level woodworking experience.
Unique solutions to common situations
Although most of the design aspects were determined before demolition began, many of the actual construction and installation methods included in these plans were developed or refined to address specific situations as they presented themselves throughout the process.
